Elion Group (ELION) has recently been selected as a model that has been dedicated to living out Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ecological vision for the good of all by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China in its national campaign across forestry and grassland bureaus at all levels, along with other nine model projects and individuals nationwide.

ELION: A Leading Desert Fighter in the Kubuqi Desert

1. Outstanding Achievements: Over the past three decades, ELION has been committed to desertification control, ecosystem restoration and poverty alleviation in the Kubuqi Desert, the seventh largest desert in China. With an investment of over RMB 30 billion in eco-restoration programs facilitating local industries and more than RMB 3 billion in those for public good, ELION has successfully transformed Kubuqi from a “Sea of Death” to life-giving oases. Such ecological progress has translated into enormous economic benefits, helping over 100,000 local residents out of poverty.

2. Major Honors: The Elion Eco-restoration Demonstration Area in the Kubuqi Desert was recognized by the UN Environment as a global desert-based Ecological Economy Demonstration Zone in 2014, and designated by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China as a national Green Economy Innovation Base in 2018.

3. President’s Recognition: “China has made significant headway in desertification prevention and control under its unwavering commitment to ecological progress. The Kubuqi Model of desert control represents proven Chinese experience in environmental management and ecological conservation for the international community to advance the UN 2030 Agenda,” remarked President Xi.
